A Closer Look at Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic health condition characterized by high blood glucose (sugar) levels. It occurs when the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin (a hormone that regulates blood sugar) or cannot use insulin effectively. There are two main types of diabetes:

  1. Type 1 Diabetes: Typically diagnosed in childhood or adolescence, Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes: This form of diabetes is more common and often develops in adulthood. In Type 2 diabetes, the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or doesn’t use insulin properly.

Diabetes can lead to various complications if not appropriately managed, including heart disease, kidney problems, nerve damage, and vision impairment.

How Does It Affect Your Vision?

High blood sugar levels can damage the blood vessels in your eyes, leading to a variety of eye problems, including:

This is the most common complication of diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy damages the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.

DME is a swelling of the macula, the central part of the retina. It can cause blurred vision and vision loss.

Cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s lens. People with diabetes are more likely to develop cataracts at a younger age.
