Insight into Eye Flashes and Floaters

The vitreous is a clear gel-like substance that fills the inside of the eye. It helps to support the retina and keep the eye’s shape. The vitreous can shrink and pull away from the retina as we age. This can cause small pieces of the vitreous to break off and float around in the eye. These pieces of vitreous are what we see as floaters.

Eye flashes can occur when the vitreous pulls on the retina. This can cause the retina to send signals to the brain that are interpreted as light.

Understanding The Causes

The most common cause of eye flashes and floaters is posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). PVD is a normal part of aging and occurs when the vitreous shrinks and pulls away from the retina. Other causes of eye flashes and floaters include:

Trauma to the eye can cause debris to enter the vitreous, creating floaters.

A serious condition where the retina pulls away from the back of the eye, causing flashes and floaters.

Inflammatory conditions can cause debris to form in the vitreous, resulting in floaters.

Expert Treatment for Flashes and Floaters in Avon

Most eye flashes and floaters are harmless and do not require treatment. However, if you experience a sudden increase in floaters or flashes or see a dark shadow over part of your vision, it is crucial to seek professional care. These could be signs of a more severe problem, like retinal detachment.

ReFocus Eye Health offers comprehensive evaluations to determine the cause of your symptoms. While there’s no surgery for removing floaters, certain cases, like those involving retinal detachment, may require surgical intervention.

Our personalized approach ensures you receive the most appropriate treatment, whether it’s monitoring your symptoms or, in some cases, addressing underlying retinal issues. Your comfort and peace of mind are our top priorities, and we’re here to guide you toward clearer, unobstructed vision.
